Iodine is a basic element that is highly soluble in water. Much of the global iodine is used in acetic acid production and as a catalyst.
Much of the global iodine comes from Japan and Chile, with a smaller amount coming from US (specifically Oklahoma). Recently, there have been shortages caused by 1) the tsunami in Japan and 2) droughts in Chile.
