Oil & Gas:
Crude oil and natural gas are key building blocks in for the chemical supply chain, as well as packaging and transportation. When the price of oil increases and stays high for 3 months (about $100/barrel), we usually get a price increase on solvents.  In addition, we may see increases on materials packaged in poly drums/pails and transportation costs/fuel surcharges. Here’s the connections:

Market Dynamics:
Refineries process crude oil and natural gas into different chemical products, such as solvents, plastics, and others.
The process: Crude oil and natural gas are mixtures of hydrocarbons (Benzene, octane, xylene, etc…). Each of these chemicals has a unique boiling point (remember how if you add wine to your sauce, the sauce cooks off the alcohol before the sauce boils? Similar concept).  To separate these mixtures, the crude is fed into a distillation tower (a still) where the different components are boiled off and recovered as they condense at different temperatures (which is how they distill hard liquors/moonshine). FYI, this boiling point concept is used in Gas Chromatography (GC) also. It's a basic concept, but very powerful and useful in both chemical manufacturing and alcohol.
